Each month Mommy writes a letter to me in addition to the daily journal she keeps of my activities, the below was written for my 25th month.
Dear Martha:
Now that I believe you are officially out of the period of time where people would traditionally count your age in months I wonder if a monthly letter to you still seems appropriate, but will error on the side that when you are older these letters will be precious words to you as you sense from your very earliest of times what a joy and a delight you are to be around and how fun it was for me to be part of your growth.
Very subtle things have developed this month. Your vocabulary has expanded from the occasional two or three words put together to more commonly so; most of the time one of the words identifies possession (mine, my, yours). You will say Mommy’s car or Daddy’s hat to describe our things. Also, when we read your books you now finish the sentences we start as you have the books memorized. It makes you very proud when I stop reading and you finish the words. I say good job and you smile.
You continue to know your own routine (and what comes next) very well. When I try to change the routine just a tiny bit you call me on it and we do it the normal way. Some evenings you decide that it’s a little later then it really is and go looking for your evening “moulk” which is usually waiting for you on the kitchen counter about 6:50 (after we have had a bath and are dressed for bed). You will march into the kitchen and if its not there you come out upset and convince me to walk with you to the refrigerator to make sure some moulk is really there.
Another part of our routine involves the morning commute to school. Since it is still dark out when we arrive to school, the “mohn” many mornings is very visible, often from the car, but usually when we are walking into the building. You take pride in finding it in the sky for me, which is no different than the pride you take in all of the things you do, which is always rewarded with an encouraging word, hug, kiss or round of applause.
Although I started praying with you before bedtime many, many months ago, this month has brought you as the initiator of our prayer time. When we are headed to bed you clasp your hands together and hold them to your chin and say “pray.” Once I have said amen, you say it too (Ahmehn). Some evenings you ask for a repeat performance (Ahgehn) and we pray again. Very sweet time, just you, me and Jesus.
Mommy (yes I am now definitely Mommy to you) loves you to the “mohn” and back and thanks Jesus in her own special prayer time for each day of your life.
XXOO,
Mommy
